Please welcome the Reverend Dr. Julius Carroll, the new Pastor of Joy of Discovery. He begins his ministry here on February 15.

Many of us remember Dr. Carroll as the facilitator of Joy of Discovery's April 2011 Leadership Retreat. Pastor Carroll comes to us from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina where he served as Associate Professor of Contextual Education.

He recently served as Director for African American/Black Ministries-Multicultural Ministries of the ELCA and is currently a member of the North Carolina Synod African Descent Strategy Team.

ANNOUNCING LENTEN BIBLE STUDY

Reflecting on the Scriptures:
Discovering JOY
during the 40-days before Easter

February 29: And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (Isaiah 35.10)

March 7: For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.            (Romans 14.17)

March 14:  By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. There is no law against such things. (Galatians 5. 22, 23)

March 21: Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was et before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.  (Hebrews 12.2)

March 28: My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.  (James 1. 1-4)

Pray Without Ceasing Adult Bible Study
1 Thessalonians 5:17

All are welcome to Pray!

Come on Wednesday evenings in 2011 during the season of Easter at 6 pm for a light supper followed by a a lively discussion and study of Pray Without Ceasing Adult Bible Study

Prayer is not a special skill to get access to God. Prayer is first about believing that where you live GOD IS PRESENT. One reason many have trouble praying is because we have spent too much time in past tense churches. Why talk to someone who used to be here? Prayer requires a present tense understanding of God. Then, if God is with you always, you can pray without ceasing.

  • Reclaim that God is present in our lives and in our world and always available to us in prayer
  • Be shaped by God to care for the same things God cares about. As they look at their world, if God is smiling about something does it make them smile too? If God is weeping about something, does it break their heart too?
  • Discover ways to bring prayer into their daily lives 7 days a week in caring and invitational ways
Although written for 3 lessons, we will move at our own pace, taking our time to fully explore the materials from ELCA.  And there's no need to worry about jumping in in the middle - come any time. Click on this link for free course materials.

The group also invites you to our monthly Open Prayer Meeting at 10:00 am on the first Sunday of each month.
